„Fathers' experience in participation of nursing of premature babies“

The aim of the study: to investigate fathers' experience in participation in nursing of premature or ill babies. The question of the study: what is the experience of fathers who are involved in the nursing of premature or ill babies? Object of the study: fathers' experience in nursing of premature or ill babies. Methodology: Qualitative phenomenological analysis. Method of collecting information used in the study – observation, semi-structured interview and literature analysis. five fathers who were involved in nursing of their premature babies were interviewed. Results and conclusions: 1. Narratives of the fathers who participated in the study revealed that every birth experience was unique and most of the fathers indicated the same emotional and physical experiences - stress, shock and helplessness. Premature neonates were deferent from the ones they imagined and this created the sense of fear. 2. Fathers tried to cope with these feelings in various ways. Results of the study revealed the most effective way to cope with the problem – cognitive activity. 3. Narratives of the fathers revealed that they were able to talk to the nurse like with the friend and the relations were very friendly. Relations between fathers and nurses that are based on reciprocal confidence stimulates fathers' involvement in baby care. 4. Fathers who attended in the study said that they would like to be informed about the neonate's condition of the health or planed procedures every day. The results of the study revealed the lack of information about their newborns health and treatment. 5. Fathers expressed their wish to learn more to recognize the demands of their newborns and how to help them in the best way. Also they expected help of the nurses involving them in the nursing process of their baby. 6. Fathers think that close physical contact between father and his baby is very important for their bonding and attachment formation.
